The school tries to give new and progressive direction to the research carried out in the fields of language, literature and culture.

Today, we are connected to the whole world through the internet, TV and other media. We encounter various languages and cultures every moment. Under such conditions, foreign languages can help us in understanding the world around us better, and can also encourage us to discover new horizons beyond our own borders. Languages can also help us to gain cultural understanding and cultivate a multi-cultural ethos. The objective of the departments of foreign languages is to help the students learn foreign languages, so that their own understanding of the world is enriched, and so that they may be better prepared to succeed in their chosen professions.

Training in foreign languages will help in meeting the increasing demand for competent communicators in the workplace and will help students to develop a variety of skills necessary in the professional world. Training in foreign languages will also help in fulfilling the increasing demand for graduates having a strong and broad base in cultural knowledge relevant to global changes in the age of information. The teachers at these departments practice the communicative approach of teaching foreign languages and make use of innovative teaching practices so that the students gain maximum benefit from the courses.

Department of French
Department of French - Introduction

Department of French

French language courses have been offered by the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies from 2012-13, initially under the aegis of the Centre for Foreign Languages. This later became the Department of French, which, in addition to running the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in French, also offers 2 and 4 credit intra and inter school open elective courses in French language and literature for P.G. programmes. From 2019-20, the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in French are also credit based, incorporating blended learning and ICT based resources in a major way.

The Department of French strives to maintain international standards in teaching-learning of French. The Department of French has the primary objective of ensuring that French is an important value addition for students in their prospective academic and professional life, as well a gateway for providing life skills that can expand the horizon of our students. Therefore, the Department of French focuses on both the linguistic and extra linguistic aspects of language learning in all FLE programmes and courses, while taking into account the specific needs of the students of this region, in addition to offering courses on French and Francophone literatures and cultures.
