About the School

The School of Media Studies was established with the aim of offering quality education, training, and research in the dynamic field of media and communication. The journey began in the academic year 1999-2000, with the launch of a Postgraduate course in Library and Information Sciences. In 2008-09, the school introduced the M.A. in Mass Communication and Journalism, and later, in 2014-15, it expanded further with the launch of the M.A./M.Sc. in Electronic Media. Since then, the School has been steadily growing as a vibrant centre for media education and research.

Inspired by the words of renowned media theorist Marshall McLuhan, who said “The world became a global village”, the School designs its curriculum with a global yet socially grounded perspective. Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Manohar Chaskar, the School emphasizes value-based education, multidisciplinary learning, and global competencies.

The School is committed to nurturing media professionals, scholars, and researchers who are creative, thoughtful, and socially responsible. Our alumni are successfully working in various fields — as journalists, reporters, news anchors, sub-editors, public relations officers, media educators, and independent researchers.

Since 2008, the School has been actively promoting research through its Ph.D. program in Mass Communication and Journalism. We take great pride in the fact that many of our Ph.D. scholars have received prestigious fellowships such as BARTI, SARTHI, UGC and others, which reflects the academic strength and credibility of our research programs.

To ensure holistic learning, the School adopts a practical and interactive approach through group discussions, presentations, demonstrations, assignments, tutorials, class tests, and field visits. Students benefit from guest lectures by industry professionals, ICT-enabled teaching methods, and hands-on training in fully equipped media labs and studios. Regular interaction with media houses and professionals further bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world media practice.

We regularly organize guest lectures and industry interactions, which bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience.

The School of Media Studies offers several unique features that make it a hub for professional media education. It maintains a strong and regular academic-industry interface, supported by a fully equipped Media Lab and Studio, along with advanced editing suites for post-production specialisation. Students receive hands-on experience with HD cameras and professional media equipment, and benefit from a dedicated space for electronic media practice. The curriculum is practical-based with project work, focusing on developing language proficiency, communication skills, and providing placement support and career guidance. Close mentoring and face-to-face interaction with faculty ensures personalised learning and growth.

The School is also actively involved in building collaborations with other schools, departments, and institutions, creating a space for interdisciplinary learning and dialogue. We believe that media is not just the fourth pillar of democracy, but also a powerful force for social change, and our School is proud to contribute to that mission.
